World Health Organisation(WHO) has warned African countries to get ready and prepare to tackle Zika virus.
The World Health Organisation Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti made the call when he said,
"I call upon countries in the region to strengthen vector control, surveillance and laboratory detection of Zika virus disease and neurological complications, as well as public awareness".
"The most effective forms of prevention are reducing mosquito populations by eliminating their potential breeding sites, and using personal protection measures to prevent mosquito bites", Moeti said.
Zika virus occurs in tropical areas with large mosquito populations and circulates in the Americas, Africa, Southern Asia and Western Pacific.
Aedes Mosquito which also spreads Dengue, Chinkungunya and yellow fever is the same mosquito that infects people with Zika virus when bitten.
In Africa Region, Cape Verde has reported 7,000 cases of Zika virus since October 2015 and considering the outbreak of the virus around the world, Africa region is at risk of an outbreak of Zika virus disease.
