MOVIES : Zoolander 2

So I finally got to see Zoolander 2 this week.

I wanted so badly for it to be good. I really wanted this one to beat the comedy sequel curse. However it was not to be.

I can't help laughing at the very quotable first movie still. I really wish I felt the same about the pathetic excuse for a sequel. I laughed once....I think.

So here are a few things I found wrong and a few things I found right :

While the first movie has the same overly cameo-ed to death feel to it, the cameos at least not only made sense but were very well chosen and not fake. This time round, it feels as if there are celebrities shoved into the film in order to just flesh it out. Example being Katy Perry's extremely fake appearance on a balcony. Wasn't funny, in fact was just odd and slightly annoying.

The first film had that fashion outsider joke to it. This helped to feel as if it was making a spectacle of a world known for being exclusive. It meant that fashion was accessible to those who felt like an outsider rather then a Vogue reader. This time around, fashion was 'in' on the joke and it felt forced. It felt like the jokes fell flat rather then being allowed to push the limits of acceptance for fear of insulting the very community it was taking the piss out of in the first place. I would rather Anna Wintour not be in a film then in it and that being overly relied on.

Will Ferrell replaying the same jokes repeatedly. I'm sorry but the foamy latte in Todd's face was funny last time.....this time it is just too familiar and over the past fifteen years has grown weak. This seems to be a repeat of Anchorman. A highly quotable film reduced to an embarrassing attempt to cash in on a former glory. I am (on that note) expecting a Dodgeball 2, Blades of Glory 2 and Old School 2 remake in the works soon.

Also, on the note of fifteen years, maybe time really hasn't helped?! Zoolander was released in 2001. I don't know about anyone else but back then I was a lot younger. Maybe my sense of humor hasn't aged well. I don't laugh because its too young a humor for me!? Just throwing out that theory. Although I am not a fan of that one!

It's not all bad though!

I did enjoy the film being in Rome, Penelope Cruz was okay not a disaster, some of the parodies were good too. Will Ferrell wasn't all bad when allowed to make new gags. So all in all, not all downhill.

Although a comedy should make you laugh more then once. I would like to say I was impressed more then I was. I would suggest this as a quick fix to a boring afternoon but certainly not an evening event.
